Rachel Taylor is a senior Ecologist at the British Trust for Ornithology in Wales, managing and delivering ornithological research into the drivers of change in bird populations. But on a Wednesday she can be found in her small glass studio, where her love of birds and the natural world is expressed differently, through the medium of copper-foiled stained glass.
Completely self-taught, she finds inspiration in science, bird-ringing and conservation; expressing through her art the joyful and painful things that cannot be said in science.
“I find something transcendent in glass as a medium for bird artwork. Birds are delicately made of the same stuff as we are, earth and water, but they are creatures of the air and light: glass is sand transmuted by fire into light.”.
