Miriam was born in Lewes. Her first collection of poetry, WINDFALL was published by Oversteps Books in 2008. She completed a creative and critical PhD at Exeter University: OTTER COUNTRY, a travel and nature memoir based on her search for the wild otter in Britain, published in 2012, followed in the footsteps of Henry Williamson and Gavin Maxwell, and is a search for the real wild animal through the many different wetlands, coastlines, rivers and urban areas of Britain. Now based at Plymouth University, Miriam teaches creative writing, poetry, life writing and non fiction at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and is currently supervising three doctoral students. Her own research and writing interests lie in the literature of animals, landscape and place; in memoir, ecopoetics, travel writing and in the new wave of nature writing of the last twenty years. She is interested in the tensions, overlaps and relationship between science, poetry, nature writing and the changing ecology of human-animal relations. Her new owl-watching book, OWL SENSE, a study of the wild owl in Europe and its long accumulation of mythology, was published by Guardian Faber in February 2018 and serialised by BBC Radio as Book of the Week. She now lives with her family in Devon
